Constitutional Rights and Civil Liberties

Cases that establish or define an individual right against the state: privacy, personal liberty, freedom of expression, freedom of religion, and bodily and reproductive autonomy. Belongs here: a ruling whose holding is about what the state may not do to a person, decided by a domestic constitutional or supreme court. Does not belong here: a ruling primarily about who counts as equal before the law, grouped under equal protection and anti-discrimination law instead, or a ruling primarily about which branch of government may decide a question, grouped under judicial review and separation of powers instead.
