Religious Law Systems

Legal systems whose source of authority is a religious text or tradition rather than a secular legislature or judiciary. Belongs here: Religious Law as the general field, Canon Law, Halakha, Sharia and Hindu Law. The doctrinal and theological content of each tradition belongs to Divinity; what belongs here is the tradition treated as a functioning body of law, its sources, its courts and its legal reasoning. Does not belong here: a national system that applies religious law only within a personal-status carveout alongside a secular or common-law base, such as Israeli Law or Indian Legal System, grouped under mixed legal systems because the religious element there is one component of a larger hybrid rather than the whole system.
