Ancient and Roman Law Jurists

Figures from classical antiquity who shaped law as a discipline of trained reasoning rather than custom alone. Belongs here: the Athenian lawgiver Draco, whose harsh code was the first Athenian law set down in writing, and the classical Roman jurists Gaius, Papinian, Ulpian and Tribonian, whose opinions and compilations became the raw material of the Corpus Juris Civilis. Does not belong here: a later scholar who studied or revived Roman law, grouped under civil law scholars and codifiers instead.
