The Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 was a United States federal law signed by President Chester A. Arthur on May 6, 1882, prohibiting all immigration of Chinese laborers, defined as skilled and unskilled laborers and Chinese employed in mining, for ten years under penalty of imprisonment and deportation; only teachers, students, government officials, tourists and merchants were exempt. The 1888 Scott Act expanded the law by barring reentry to the United States after departure. The exclusion remained in force until the Chinese Exclusion Repeal Act of 1943, which allowed 105 Chinese immigrants to enter the United States annually; in 2012 the House of Representatives passed a resolution formally expressing regret for the act.
