The Australia Act 1986 is the short title of a pair of mirror statutes, one an act of the Parliament of Australia and the other an act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom, which together came into force on 3 March 1986 at 05:00 GMT. The Act ended all power of the United Kingdom Parliament to legislate with effect in Australia, gave state premiers rather than the UK government the right to advise the monarch on the appointment or removal of a state governor, and eliminated the last remaining avenues of appeal from Australian courts to the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council in London. The Australian Act remains unamended, while the UK Act's status is recorded as amended.
