Jeremy Bentham was an English philosopher, jurist, and social reformer regarded as the founder of modern utilitarianism. He held that the greatest happiness of the greatest number was the measure of right and wrong, became a leading theorist in Anglo-American philosophy of law, and opposed the idea of natural law and natural rights, calling them nonsense upon stilts. He is known for his 1789 book An Introduction to the Principles of Morals and Legislation, the first major work on utilitarianism.
