Ahmed Cevdet Pasha (1822 to 1895) was an Ottoman scholar, bureaucrat, jurist and historian who headed the commission that drafted the Mecelle, the first codification of Hanafi Islamic jurisprudence into a modern, European-style civil code. He was proficient in Turkish, Arabic, Persian, French and Bulgarian, and his commission's work took effect in 1877.
