The European Court of Human Rights is an international court established by the Council of Europe to rule on applications alleging violation of the European Convention on Human Rights (1950). Seated in Strasbourg, France, it began operating in 1959. Unlike the International Court of Justice, individuals, not only states, may bring applications directly against a member state that has allegedly violated their Convention rights.
