The Italian mixed tribunal (corte d'assise) that tries the most serious criminal offences, composed of two professional judges and six lay judges drawn from the local citizenry, with a separate corte d'assise d'appello hearing appeals. A local corte d'assise sits in each judicial district; the Corte d'Assise of Perugia tried and convicted Amanda Knox and Raffaele Sollecito of the 2007 murder of Meredith Kercher, a verdict later overturned on appeal and definitively acquitted by the Supreme Court of Cassation.
