The Civil Code of the People's Republic of China is China's first unified civil code, adopted by the 13th National People's Congress on 28 May 2020 and effective 1 January 2021. Comprising 1,260 articles across seven books, it consolidated and repealed nine previously separate statutes, including the Marriage Law, Inheritance Law, the 1986 General Principles of Civil Law, Adoption Law, Contract Law and Property Law, into a single framework covering property, contracts, personality rights, family relations, inheritance and tort liability. It was the first Chinese law to carry the title code since the People's Republic's founding in 1949, and its overall legal-family lineage traces to the Germanic civil-law tradition rather than to common law.
